The Lion and the Mouse in Your Organization

Why your best ideas are dying in silence 🦁🐭

The body is not the only place where we have muscles worth training. At some point in your career, you’ve likely swallowed your words in a meeting. You had the solution, you saw the mistake coming, but you chose to stay “nice.”

This is for the “Mice” in our Mozambican organizations. The ones who try so hard to be respectful that they cancel themselves out, especially when sitting across from the “Lions” of the company.

“Respect” or just a really shiny bottleneck?

In Mozambique, we have a deep cultural respect for hierarchy. But being honest, in many offices, the distance between a Director and a subordinate is so wide and frightening that silence is often mistaken for respect.

This isn’t just a “feeling.” It’s a systemic execution killer. When a team prefers the safety of passivity over the risk of “challenging” a boss, the results are fatal:

  • Critical errors go unreported: Nobody wants to be the “messenger of bad news” only to get punished for it.
  • Innovations die in the cradle: Great ideas are never whispered because they don’t sound “safe” enough.
  • The “Vai e Vem” tax: We redo tasks three times because nobody dared to tell the Lion that the first instruction didn’t make sense.

When hierarchy is the main bottleneck, the company stalls at the top. Failure in our market is rarely about a lack of technical skill, it’s about a cultural barrier that stops someone from raising their hand before the mistake hits the balance sheet.

The Communication Compass: Who is running your office?

To understand why progress stalls, we look at the Communication Style Wheel. Most Mozambican teams get stuck in a loop between two archetypes:

  • 🐭 The Mouse (Passive): You “squeak” or stay silent to avoid conflict. You have the data to save the project, but you hide it to avoid disturbing the hierarchy. In our market, this silence isn’t respect, it’s just fear. The Cost: You let the company fail because you were taught to be “nice.”
  • 🦁 The Lion (Aggressive): You dominate through volume and authority. You “roar” to get things done. The problem? You turn everyone around you into a Mouse out of survival instinct. The silence isn’t your “assertiveness” or generalized agreement, it’s distance. The Cost: Talent flight. You spend years training your best people, only to watch them leave for a competitor because you made the office unlivable.

The Goal: The Owl (Assertive) 🦉 This is the hidden muscle. The Owl is direct without being rude and clear without being intimidating. They use Bazar Diplomacy, navigating the local reality with global standards. This is where focus wins over noise.

The Congruence Challenge: stop breeding passivity

Many managers are frustrated that their teams “only work for the paycheck”. But how can you expect passion if the culture rewards the silence of the Mouse and tolerates the roar of the Lion?

Survival in 2026 requires your communication to shift from an authority monologue to an integrative cycle. Passion only grows when the “Mouse” feels safe enough to become an “Owl”.

Assertiveness is not a gift, it’s a muscle that can be trained.

At SENSIT, we don’t just “talk” about culture. We help your team strip away the “face-saving” noise so this muscle can finally grow.

Mozambique’s future will be written by those that invest in their Operational Signal.
